Well I am here to tell you about the hardware and software solutions that the professionals use to make your favorite music. If you are the audience I am trying to reach with this blog then I am just like you. I am someone who wants to start producing all kinds of electronic music from house, dubstep, and trance to electropop, and industrial rock or anything that inspires me at a particular moment. With a little help from my more knowledgeable friends, extensive blog scouring, and reading interviews with today’s biggest electronic music makers, I have a pretty good handle on what you need to craft your next soundcloud masterpiece.
While it would seem to make the most sense to start with software here, some of these hardware packages come with included software that I will be mentioning later. It’s also a good place for you to decide whether or not you want to invest in hardware for your production. I am a huge advocate for MIDI keyboards and control surfaces but in the digital age I understand that many of you can get around that extra purchase and just use the laptop, but it makes more sense to get your hands on a set of keys or drum pads if you really want to experiment with your compositions.
This list includes things that I found to be the best solutions, but at the end of the day I understand that workflow is purely subjective. Some people swear by Reason and Fruity Loops, and others will tell you that you don’t need any Hardware because everything you need is in the software. These people are not wrong, they just have a way that is comfortable to them for producing electronic music. I like to get my hands on a keyboard, bang out a beat on drum pads, and I like to have endless options for sounds. Here are the things that I think will benefit that type of workflow.
Audio production software helps sound engineers, producers and musicians to record and edit music, as well as to remix and re-master finished tracks. Production
Expect tools and features to create tracks from scratch, such as beat and percussion sequencers as well as instrument and effects suites. There should be tools to combine, manipulate, modify, remove, refine and replace track elements and audio file attributes. You should be able to import and export a variety of file types and use plugins to achieve various functions and effects. Often, some of the software's mixer functions are duplicated in the main production area for convenience.
Mixer
Most DAWs have full-featured mixers that can record and edit audio, provide visuals of wave-forms and control equalization functions. At minimum, mixers should have controls that let you adjust the volume, and panning and effects plugins for multiple related tracks that you can route to submix busses. Mixer pan controls allow you to position sounds in various locations within the stereo soundscape. The mixer is also the place where you can compensate for any delay introduced into a track during recording.
Effects
Digital audio workstations contain effects such as guitar amplifier emulators and instrument synthesizers. You should also be able to adjust basic equalization effects with bass, middle and treble frequency controls, among other EQ plugins. Effects features also include control over mono and stereo processing, as well as the ability to add compression, reverb and other effects.
Help & Support
Audio production software should be helpful at every stage of production. Look for built-in help sections, how-to guides, tutorials, training videos, online manuals, FAQs, user forums and online correspondence with the manufacturer. The user forums are supportive.
Audio production software at entry-level prices is surprisingly good. These products contain sufficient functionality to keep you happy for quite a while before you'll start wishing for the extra features, plugins and effects that pro-level versions provide. Pick your entry-level product carefully, though, because these products are so feature rich that once you learn to use one, you are likely to maintain brand loyalty so that you don't have to learn a new complicated product.
- How well you navigate in the program. If you can’t accomplish what you want without getting a headache trying to figure out where different settings or features are at, then you won’t be as productive.
- Ease of automation. Automation is an important aspect of music production, and a good DAW should make it as easy as possible to both control and record as well as edit automation of effects and other parameters.
- The stock plugins for both effects and instruments as well as supported formats of plugins. Most of the best plugins I’ve used were aftermarket and not out of the box in any DAW, but having a good groundwork to start from is a bonus. If the selection of plugins is limited or low quality to start then you’ll have to spend additional money on better ones on top of whatever you paid for the DAW. Having supported formats such as VST plugins, RTAS plugins, or AU plugins is a pretty big factor as well, as a big chunk of the plugins out there utilize one or more of these formats. Although they are both great DAW’s, Reason and Pro Tools do not support VST plugins which is kind of a bummer. There are ways to get around these issues as well, such as workaround plugins that run VSTs through them (FXpansion) or rewiring another DAW that does support externally developed plugins into Reason.
